Living wills

Dr. Pather is an expert in advising you about a living will as she works in hospital and is familiar with the treatments that you may wish to opt out of. A living will (advance decision to refuse treatment) ensures that your wishes are respected and that you are spared from unnecessary invasive investigations and treatments when you are no longer able to make decisions for yourself.

Who should make a living will?

No-one should make one but it may be useful if you have a terminal or progressive condition and do not wish to be subjected to life prolonging treatments.

What is needed to make a living will?

It’s necessary that you fully understand the relevant treatments that may be involved. Discussion with a doctor familiar with such treatments is imperative. Mental capacity at the time of making a living will is essential. Having a report evidencing your mental capacity ensures that your living will is enforced.
